PEHIN Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs, is attending the 105th International Labour Conference (ILC) from June 7-9, in Geneva, Switzerland.
This year’s ILC is being held from May 30 to June 11 and carries the theme ‘Building a Future with Decent Work’, according to a statement from the Department of Labour, Ministry of Home Affairs.
During the conference, the participants will discuss, among others, issues related to the chains of world supplies, employment in the service of peace, security and resistance to disasters and the impact of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization.
The delegates will also consider amendments to the Labour Code Maritime Convention and the Director General’s report on poverty.
Also attending are Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Mahdi bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Awang Haji Abdul Rahman, the Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to Geneva; Haji Mohd ‘Abdoh bin Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Salam, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs; Haji Rani bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohd Yusof, the Acting Commissioner of Labour; and senior government officials from the Labour Department, as well as, representatives from employers and workers.

On June 7, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar, in his plenary statement during the 105th ILC, applauded the ILO’s efforts in taking a lead role in promoting decent work in the global supply chain through the numerous systematic ILO development cooperation programmes implemented by the organisation between the year 2000 and 2015.
In acknowledging the need to create a diverse pro-business environment in the country, the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam aims to ensure at each step of the chain – from production to refinement to exportation of local resources and goods – that social protection should remain a top priority in Brunei Darussalam where demand should not come at the expense of the welfare and well-being of the workers.
Prior to his plenary statement, the minister attended a brief meeting with Asean Labour and Employment Ministers hosted by the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of Lao PDR to discuss labour and employment related issues in the Asean context.
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar also attended the World Day Against Child Labour Event; the World of Work Summit on Decent Jobs For Youth session as well as conducted bilateral meetings with Singapore and Cambodia.
The ILO is a tripartite United Nations agency since 1919. The ILO brings together governments, employers and workers representatives of 187 member states to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men.
Brunei Darussalam has been a member state of the ILO since January 2007, the statement said.
