SOME 20 underprivileged families in Tutong District received Zakat money yesterday at Kampong Danau Mosque, Tutong in conjunction with the upcoming Hari Raya.
The money was distributed by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, who is also President of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council.
The heads of the 20 families each received $500, while each member of the families received $400. The money came from the Zakat fund for the poor.
It was hoped that the distribution will lessen the recipients’ burden and remind them to perform their religious obligations and shun what is forbidden by Allah the Almighty.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) is also holding Tedarus ceremonies at several mosques nationwide in this blessed month of Ramadhan to foster closer ties and unity among its officers and staff and the Muslim community.

The Minister of Religious Affairs yesterday led the Tedarus ceremony held at Kampong Danau Mosque. Present were the residents of the village.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Al-Fatihah led by the minister himself, followed by Al-Quran reading.
A translation of Surah Al-Imran verses was read by Hilman bin Haji Salim, an invited speaker and a former Al-Azhar University student, highlighting Muslim unity in doing good deeds and avoiding wrongdoings.
Tahlil and prayers for the departed were also recited.
Also in attendance were the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud; Permanent Secretary at the MoRA, Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof; Deputy Permanent Secretary (Administrative and Financial Affairs) at the MoRA, Roslan bin Haji Taja’ah; and head of departments of the ministry.
