AROUND 240 students attended a two-day briefing on the Sultan’s Scholar scholarship scheme both on Monday and Tuesday at Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (Yayasan) in the capital.
On hand to conduct the briefing was Hajah Donnaliza binti Abdullah Puasa, the Assistant Managing Director of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
Among the contents of the briefing were the conditions and criteria of the scholarship scheme, as well as processes and procedures, facilities and benefits, and the development programme.
Hajah Donnaliza explained that during the selection process, there are a number of criteria taken into consideration, including the involvement of students in various fields and co-curricular activities outside of school.
The involvement of students in charitable work, as well as community participation in educational activities, physical activities, spiritual activities and scientific talent, as well as the building of quality leadership, was also highlighted.
It was mentioned during the briefing that activities such as these are required, in addition to other qualifications.

With this exposure to the Sultan’s Scholar scholarship scheme, it is hoped that students will be further encouraged to strive towards achieving excellent results and being better prepared to ensure they fulfil the standards set by the scheme.
The Sultan’s Scholar scholarship is a prestigious scholarship awarded to students that have been identified by Yayasan, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs, as being excellent both academically and outside of school. It is a scholarship for students to further their studies in a number of fields towards degree level or a similar level at prestigious institutions of higher learning that are approved by Yayasan and recognised by the Brunei Government.
The scheme is aimed at producing individuals who are knowledgeable, civilised, skilled and disciplined for the benefit of the country in the long-term.
The Monday session saw the attendance of students from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College, Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien College, Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School, Raja Isteri Girls High School, Meragang Sixth Form Centre, Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre and Jerudong International School.
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s session saw the attendance of students from International School Brunei, Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School, Tutong, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Secondary School, Tutong, Tutong Sixth Form Centre, Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School, Kuala Belait, Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, Kuala Belait, Perdana Wazir Secondary School, Kuala Belait, Sultan Hassan Secondary School, Temburong, and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School.
