DBP to launch Language Month

THE Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) will be launching celebrations for Language Month in the Brunei-Muara District on July 2, Hajah Sariani binti Haji Ishak, the Acting Deputy Director of DBP, announced during a press conference at the DBP building in Berakas yesterday.

The celebration will also be held in other districts: Tutong District on August 13, Temburong District on September 3 and Belait District on September 10. Among the planned activities are prize presentations for students who excelled in Malay and a launching of a book titled, ‘Watikah Ikrar Bahasa’.

Hajah Sariani also said that Language Month has been an annual event for DBP since 2012 to honour a titah made by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, for the DBP to uphold and preserve the Malay language.

Several departments will also be involved during the celebrations, such as Museums Department, the Brunei History Centre and the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education.

Meanwhile, the DBP will also organise an essay writing competition, which is the first of its kind to be associated with Language Month.

The competition is open to all citizens and permanent residents, aged 18 years and above, and the subject deals with the issues and development of Malay Language. For more information and details on the competition, contact 2382511 ext 157/ 154.
