HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam received pesambah from several associations, companies and individuals, during the get-together ceremony with the residents of Tutong District held in commemoration of the monarch’s 70th birthday celebration yesterday.

Thirty-six-year-old Mimi Farah Yahidah binti Haji Omar, an art teacher from Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School Tutong, felt humbled and blessed to be given another opportunity to present the monarch with a pesambah this year.

Her pesambah – a digital painting of His Majesty – took her a week to complete.

According to her, the background of the painting features an Islamic geometric pattern that portrays His Majesty as the ruler of an Islamic country.

She said the black, red, yellow and white she chose for the pattern are the colours of the national flag.

“I have tried applying what I have learnt during my studies years ago. I wanted to uphold His Majesty’s titah for youths to become skilful in the creative industry. This was an opportunity to encourage the people, especially students, to explore the creative industry,” she added.

The owner of Nazmi Textile, Nazeer Ahmad Zakaria, who usually presents the monarch with a pesambah at both the get-together ceremonies in Tutong and Brunei-Muara districts, gave an exclusive Bohor (Islamic Oud incense burner) flown in from Dubai.

He also took the opportunity to wish His Majesty good health and longevity.

The Tiong Hua Association of Tutong District presented a five-kilogramme birthday cake and Chinese calligraphy artwork to the monarch.

A representative of the association, Soon Seng Lee said the cake and the artwork were decorated with peaches and Chinese characters that symbolise longevity and good health.

Seventy-four-year-old Haji Sigai bin Haji Ghani from Kampong Sinaut, came with his whole family to hand over to the monarch an antique bronze kettle he named ‘Cerek Bebunga Manggis’.

He said the pesambah was a symbol of appreciation and gratitude from his family to His Majesty for being a caring and loving ruler.
