TEN students and two supervising teachers from Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Secondary School (SMYSHHB) departed for the Temburong District via boat yesterday to attend the Climate Camp at Sumbiling Eco Village as part of the ACE Enrichment programme for the month of August.
Principal Chong Li Chen, who sent the group off, said, “We always have this kind of programme at YSHHB Secondary School, and it is for the students’ development – sometimes they go for leadership programmes. With the theme focused on climate change, we want them to be aware of global issues. After undergoing the programme, we hope they will be able to practice and better understand global issues.”
Participant Azim Sulaiman said he was looking forward to the camp, which encourages them to be independent while they are away from home and their parents.
Through the camp, the Years 9 and 10 students will have the opportunity to gain better understanding of the importance of addressing climate change issues, learn about environmental situations in Brunei, appreciate the value of our natural resources. At the same time, they will be able to enjoy the serenity of Temburong and get active through various jungle and water activities that include trekking, swimming, tubing, waterfall visit, and a night walk.
The camp will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of environmental knowledge, with focus on climate change issues.
The students will experience first-hand the green Heart of Borneo as they hike through jungle paths and river routes; experience life in the rainforest to challenge themselves by venturing out of their comfort zone. The camp is packed with leadership and teambuilding activities that will test students skills and abilities.
