CRIMINALS are exploiting the increased movement of people and products brought by globalisation. To deal with these issues effectively it is necessary to enhance law enforcement and border management cooperation.

The importance of law enforcement cooperation regionally and globally was highlighted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Pengiran Mohd Jefri bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Hamid, during the opening ceremony of the EU-Asean Migration and Border Management Training Programme II, organised by Interpol and Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) recently.

Some 15 law enforcement participants from 10 Asean member states took part in the programme that lasted six-days (August 15-20) at a hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The Interpol training course under the EU-Asean programme will help the effort of police and immigration authorities in the region to curb opportunities for criminals and terrorists, the assistant commissioner said.

The EU-Asean Migration and Border Management Programme is a continuation of the pilot project ‘EU-Asean Border Management Programme’ which was completed in June 2012. Funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by Interpol, the programme seeks to strengthen law enforcement networks and cooperation at the main regional transit hub in Asean member countries.

Interpol Project Manager, Rastislav Sasik said, “The training course in Brunei represents a further step in empowering participants with a deeper understanding of Interpol global policing capabilities, thereby enhancing their ability to conduct border management operations, as well as fostering international collaboration between Asean member countries.”

The closing ceremony on August 20 was officiated by Senior Superintendent of Police and Acting Director of the Criminal Investigation Department of RBPF, Kevin Chiuh Ted Voon.

Also present during the closing ceremony was Interpol Assistant Director, Asia and South Pacific, Shui Jiang.

All the 15 law enforcement officers were presented with certificates for completing the training.
