MABBIM (Language Council of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia), an association comprising Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Indonesia, countries that are trying to promote greater usage of the Malay language held a lecture at the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) yesterday.
Attending the gathering was the director of the bureau, Hajah Aminah binti Haji Momin, who inquired of the audience whether they thought the creative industry has the capability to strengthen the use of the Malay language so that it might possibly one day be accepted more globally.
“This can only be achieved if the creative industry utilises their potential through a high degree of Malay language use that incorporates innovation and the arts in tandem with the language,” the director explained before adding that “in this manner it can become a tool of unity in the forming of social integration in the community”.
Pointing out that participants must expose the competency of the Malay language by integrating it seamlessly in the field of science, technology and contemporary knowledge, Hajah Aminah said, “the development of the creative industry not only can generate extra income for the economy but can also enrich the diversity of cultures present in our region.”
The lecture entitled ‘Enhancing the Malay language through the Entertainment and Creative Industry’ was presented by Professor Dr Mohammad Hatta bin Azad Khan, a Rector from a Malaysian institution called ‘Seni Budaya Dan Warisan Kebangsaan’, and was attended by government officials comprising lecturers, linguists, educators, university undergraduates and pre-university students.
