A TOTAL of 303 students from Kemuda Institute received their diplomas yesterday during the institute’s 5th Convocation Ceremony at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

Present as the guest of honour at the ceremony was Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education.

In her welcoming remarks, Hajah Hasnah binti Haji Azri, the Managing Director of Kemuda Institute, said that the institute is currently holding discussions with universities in Malaysia and the United Kingdom, in the hopes of offering Bachelor’s Degree courses by next year.

She also informed that Kemuda Institute is currently offering Value-Adding courses, as well as Lifelong Learning programmes, to interested members of the public.

Hajah Hasnah said that the last two years have witnessed their students’ participation in several activities such as the Youth Leadership Programme, JENESYS, the Student Exchange Programme with Japan, and the Korean Culture Club with the Korean Embassy in Brunei Darussalam.

“In line with Vision 2035, which aims at producing more highly skilled people for Brunei, the main mission of Kemuda Institute is to generate skilled graduates, and provide lifelong academic opportunities to increase their chances of seeking employment,” she said.

She added that one of the performance management methods practised by Kemuda Institute is utilising the Balanced Scorecard and Key Performance Indicator (KPI), where incentives are provided to the lecturers based on their students’ academic achievements. Such methods, she said, helped to boost the lecturers’ efforts and persistence, in ensuring that they were doing their best to educate the students.

The ceremony then saw a presentation of the Information Technology graduation certificates to the advanced diploma, diploma and certificate students by the Minister of Education.

The minister also presented special awards to eight selected graduates who displayed excellent academic results throughout their respective courses.

Later, another special prize, the Executive Chairman Award, was presented to Azalina binti Sabli by Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Razak bin Haji Muhammad, Executive Chairman of Kemuda Institute.

Azalina, who graduated with a Diploma in Business IT, said that she was surprised at receiving the award, but was grateful to have been chosen as the recipient.

“It is overwhelming, but I hope that this award will encourage other students to work harder in the future,” she said. “At Kemuda Institute, I experienced a turning point when I had to re-sit my examination, and that’s when it struck me that I had to work hard to achieve more. My advice is to not give up and always strive for more success.

“It has been a very exciting year for me, while studying with Kemuda Institute. I thank all my lecturers, the staff and fellow coursemates for their help and support in making me who I am today. I am thankful to be blessed with tremendous values through the programme which I joined.”

The convocation ceremony ended with a Doa Selamat and a group photo session with the Minister of Education.
