A PROMOTION ceremony was held for three superintendents from the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) yesterday, at which Yahya bin Haji Abdul Rahman, the Director of Fire and Rescue, was present to officiate.
The three superintendents who have been promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendents are Senior Superintendent Taib bin Haji Abdul Kahar, Senior Superintendent Nohi Irwan Surkaki bin Haji Pawi and Senior Superintendent Noor Aflan bin Kachi.
Senior Superintendent Taib told the Bulletin that he joined the FRD in 1985, and has been assigned to several posts and stations during his 30-year career. Currently, he holds the post as head of fire prevention and is also one of the heads at the FRD Enforcement and Licensing Unit.
He even had the opportunity to attend several courses both locally and abroad, starting with the Basic Fire Service Officer course at the Muara Fire Training Centre, followed by another training session at the Hong Kong Fire Services Training School.
He also attended the Commander and Fire Prevention course at the Fire Services College in the United Kingdom, a Fire Prevention Technique course in Japan and a Fire Safety Specialist course at the Singapore Civil Defence.
Senior Superintendent Nohi Irwan, meanwhile, joined the FRD in 2001 as an Assistant Fire Superintendent, and has been assigned to several posts, including at Temburong and Kuala Belait.
When asked about the challenges that he encountered during his 15 years of service, he replied that events such as forest and chemical fires have provided with him with valuable exposure to firefighting techniques.
He emphasised that a firefighter’s main responsibility is ensuring public safety, and also that of their colleagues involved in a team operation.
Senior Superintendent Noor Aflan will commence his duties as the Commanding Officer of Operation ‘C’ on Saturday, where he will be responsible for four stations in Berakas, Lambak Kanan and Rimba, as well as the Fire Women’s Unit.
Previously, Senior Superintendent Noor Aflan, who joined the department in February 2001, was a Deputy Commanding Officer in the same division.
During his 15 years of service, he attended several courses on firefighting techniques, which he shared with his subordinates.
He pursued his studies at the University of Glamorgan in Wales, from 2009 to 2011, before resuming his education as a Bachelor of Science in Disaster Management and Emergency Planning at the Coventry University, in the United Kingdom.
Yesterday’s ceremony con-cluded with a recitation of the Doa Selamat by the religious teacher at the FRD, Ustaz Haji Adanan bin Haji Ahmad.
