THE Mukim Kilanas Consultative Council is currently hosting a family-themed trade fair at The Airport Mall, with the cooperation of the Brunei-Muara District Office.
A total of 44 booths have been set up for the event, including eight representing the village consultative councils of Kampong Bebuloh, Sengkurong ‘A’, Tungku and Katok, Kapok, STKRJ Lambak Kanan, Sungai Bunga and Putat.
The fair was officially opened yesterday by Haji Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs.
An array of interesting items are being sold at the venue, including traditional parangs, or machetes, made by Haji Junggal bin Jumat from Kampong Putat, who inherited the skill of carving knives and wood designs from his father.
In an interview, the 76-year-old former government officer said, “Depending on the design of the parang’s handle, some may take three to four days to complete.”

Haji Junggal’s children have also inherited the art of making wooden handicrafts, which are on display at their booth.
On the public’s response, he said, “We have participated in numerous expos and exhibitions, where the reception was quite good. We hope to participate in more expos, to introduce our wares for an overseas market”.
In his welcoming remarks, Md Rais bin Haji Sabtu, the co-chairperson of the organising committee said, “The carnival is one of the incipient economic activities of the Mukim Kilanas Consultative Council, to raise financial resources or funding.
“The Mukim Kilanas Consultative Council and the MHG event management have come together to assist, guide and provide counselling to the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) of Kampong Kilanas and Jangsak to conduct business and to help improve the business environment”.
The trade fair at The Airport Mall will continue until September 11.
