STUDENTS from Jerudong International School (JIS) attended a talk by Patrick Maddams, the Sub-Treasurer of the Inner Temple, about studying law in the United Kingdom yesterday.

Maddams represents the Inn on the Board of the Council of the Inns of Court which delivers a range of both regulatory and professional services to the Bar of England and Wales, in addition to advocacy training programmes internationally.

He maintains the Inn’s links with organisations ranging from the American Inns of Court Foundation to the Royal Commonwealth Society, as well as liaison with government departments, high commissions and embassies in London.

Dean of Higher Education at JIS, Russell Mann said the visit by such an esteemed member of the legal fraternity to JIS presented an extraordinary opportunity for students to gain invaluable insights into the UK legal profession.

Maddams explained the role of a barrister, the functioning of the four Inns of Court, including the process known as ‘Call to the Bar’ and the importance of the Bar Professional Training Course.

He also provided students with fascinating historical details about the Inner Temple, which dates back to the 13th Century and has played a central role in the legal profession of England since that time, in particular in the provision of education and training for the Bar.

Maddams emphasised the value of studying law offered at universities in the UK, which consistently rank among the best in the world, and delineated the different pathways available to becoming a barrister, either by taking an undergraduate Law degree followed by applying directly for the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), or an undergraduate qualification in any subject followed by a Graduate Diploma of Law prior to commencing the BPTC.

Speaking after Maddams were JIS alumni Pengiran Shahyzul Khairuddien bin Pengiran Abdul Rahman and Hajah Noor Amalina binti Dato Paduka Haji Alaihuddin from the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam who shared their experiences as Bruneian law students in the UK.

Pengiran Shahyzul was educated at the London School of Economics where he took a degree in Law (LLB). He joined the Attorney General’s Chambers as legal counsel in December 2009 and was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in March 2010. He was appointed a Magistrate of the Subordinate Courts in January 2015.

Hajah Noor Amalina was educated at the University of Nottingham where she took a degree in Law (LLB) and thereafter at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London where she took a Master of Laws (LLM) degree in International Law.

She was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in November 2012 and in April 2013 joined the Attorney General’s Chambers as legal counsel.

She was appointed a Registrar of the Supreme Court in September 2013. Both Pengiran Shahyzul and Hajah Noor Amalina were scholars of the Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam.
