THE Department of Labour yesterday said that employers must provide proper and hygienic accommodation for their labour workforce.
In a statement, the department said, “Among the requirements as stated under Section 80, Employment Order, 2009, every employer who undertakes to provide accommodation for workmen employed either by him or by some other person with whom he has entered into a contract of service, shall provide and maintain for those workmen and their dependents: sufficient and proper hygienic accommodation; sufficient supply of wholesome water; and sufficient and proper sanitary arrangements.
As the need to engage foreign labour workforce to supplement the local workforce in Brunei Darussalam is an integral part of the economy, the department reminded the public, especially all employers, to comply with the Employment Order, 2009.
Some examples of a proper accommodation for workers includes a dormitory which has a clean and safe environment and meets the basic needs of workers such as proper sanitation, provisions for laundry, cooking, sufficient supply of water, safety precautions for fire or other hazards.
Any employer who fails to provide such accommodation and sanitary arrangements for their employees, is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $3,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both, according to the statement.
Under the Workplace Safety and Health Order, 2009, employers also have a duty to ensure that their premises/ place of work is safe and healthy for their workers and anyone in the workplace.
The department said it is actively monitoring and conducting regular inspections to ensure that employers comply with the requirements under the Employment Order, 2009 and also the Workplace Safety and Health Order, 2009.
The department said it takes the welfare and safety of all workers seriously and will not be hesitant in taking stern action against irresponsible employers.
“We would also like to take this opportunity to advise the public to report any complaints regarding worker accommodations or any other labour related issues to the Department of Labour through the hotline 2381848 or via email at led@buruh.gov.bn.”
