IN A bid to nurture Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) members, volunteers from non-government organisations (NGOs) organised a ‘Unified Football’ clinic yesterday at the football field of the Ministry of Development.
SOBD President cum guest of honour Lt Col (Rtd) Pengiran Rambli bin Pengiran Haji Bunut joined football coaches, family members and committee members of the board at the event.
On September 24, the 7th Global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day (EKS Day) will be celebrated around the world.
It is this year themed ‘Unity,’ with the aim of bringing together people with and without disabilities in various activities to honour the inspiration, impact and indomitable spirit of Eunice Kennedy Shriver.
Fifty SOBD members will participate in four different skill stations, rotating at every 10 minutes.
The president hopes that through such activities, members can promote a healthy lifestyle through a healthy mind, body and attitude.
“The Special Olympics fosters the competitive spirit, and allows individuals with intellectual disabilities to be exposed to a world and cultures beyond their own.
“We hope such event will help generate awareness and discover hidden potential of existing and new SOBD members,” he added.
The president was happy to note that SOBD had already been given the opportunity to participate in regional competitions next month, in various fields of sports – including football and Bocce.
SOBD was founded in April 2004 as a non-profit, non-government organisation, which works closely with several government ministries as well as other Brunei-based non-government organisations.
SOBD’s mission is to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to participate in Olympic-type sports such as Bocce, Football and Bowling.
