EIGHTY-five to 95 per cent of road accidents in Brunei Darussalam are attributed to driver behaviour, with ‘road environment’ and ‘vehicle defects’ being the second and third, according to the National Road Safety Council yesterday at the Atrium of the Airport Mall in Berakas.
The National Road Safety Council took part in the Insurance and Takaful Day celebration where it set up a booth to raise public awareness on the importance of road safety by displaying road statistics gathered from 2013 to 2015.
Pengiran Khairul Yusra bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Yusuf, Senior Enforcement Officer of the National Road Safety Council, remarked that ‘driver behaviour’ accidents were increasing due to mobile phone usage and distractions.
He advised drivers to completely avoid using mobile phones while driving or to simply stop by the road side if they couldn’t resist not answering a call.

To tackle this problem, road operations will soon be increased by traffic law enforcement agencies to minimise the number of people using phones while driving.
In addition, road infrastructure of selected areas will be improved. Meanwhile CCTVs and speed cameras are in the process of being installed in accident-prone areas.
Other causes of road accidents include speeding, tailgating and even intoxication, amongst others.
