PEHIN Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, Minister of Home Affairs, attended the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) held in New Delhi, India from November 3-5 according to a press release.
The AMCDRR was hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India with cooperation of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
The theme for this conference was Risk Sensitive Development for Community Resilience. Officiated by the Prime Minister of the Government of India, Shri Narendra Modi, the conference was well attended by ministers responsible for disaster risk reduction of Asia.
In his statement at the ministerial plenary session, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar highlighted, amongst others, Brunei Darussalam’s continuous commitment in supporting disaster risk reduction initiatives in the region particularly through the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
He then reiterated on Brunei Darussalam’s concern on Climate Change especially in mitigation and adaptation measures.
The minister also highlighted the importance of shared commitments and close cooperation in capacity building and disaster resilience for peace and stability in the region.

While in New Delhi, the minister also attended the launch of the ‘One Asean One Response’ on November 4. This is to ensure the momentum of this declaration which was signed by the Asean Leaders during the 28th Asean Summit on September 6 in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
The ‘One Asean One Response’ showcased Asean’s capacity and capability in responding to disasters in Asean as well as outside the region.
The minister also held bilateral meetings with the heads of delegation from the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Republic of the Philippines. The bilateral meetings discussed mutual cooperation to further strengthen bilateral cooperation as well as exploring new areas of cooperation in disaster management and disaster risk reduction.
Also attending the conference were Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs; Dato Paduka Haji Sidek bin Ali, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to India; Abdul Rahim bin Haji Ismail, Acting Director of the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) and officials from the Brunei Darussalam High Commission in India as well as from the NDMC.
