THE New Muara Container Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (NMCTS) has been named as one of the best employers in Asia, during the 7th CMO Asia’s Best Employer Brand Awards 2016 held in Singapore recently.
CMO Asia, a non-for-profit organisation for marketing professionals in the region, recognised NMCTS for exhibiting a culture of contribution and innovation as well as improving human resource policies.
NMCTS, the local subsidiary of the Philippines-based ICTSI, is currently the operator of the Muara Container Terminal (MCT). Locals make up 85 per cent of its employees and the company enjoys excellent working relationship with Bruneian suppliers and businesses.
“We are very proud to be the only Bruneian company recognised by CMO Asia. This recognition reflects the kind of work culture and environment we have at NMCTS. This motivates us to further improve our existing policies and best practices to continue providing excellent services in the Port of Muara,” said Reimond Silvestre, Director and General Manager of NMCTS.
“As Brunei’s leading trading gateway, Muara Port deserves only the best people manager and technology provider to successfully operate the MCT. We are committed to continue applying ICTSI’s corporate culture into NMCTS operations. We intend to replicate ICTSI Group’s the excellent human development programmes in our Brunei operations,” he added.

Meanwhile, Manuel De Jesus, ICTSI’s Vice-President for Business Development, stressed that the key to ICTSI’s success is its people management.
“One of our core strengths is our highly capable manpower. It is key to the way we operate all of our port concessions worldwide. We start by bringing in people from our headquarters in Manila to jumpstart operations and train the locals who will eventually take over once everything is in place. But at the end, our goal is for each of our terminals to be run by 100 per cent local manpower,” he explained.
“We have long-term plans for Brunei and we are fully committed to continue providing the same excellence we bring to our global operations, involving 30 terminals in 20 countries. We are especially thankful to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte because his state visit to Brunei has further enhanced the good relations between the Philippines and Brunei which is necessary in providing an improved business climate,” the ICTSI executive added.
It is ICTSI’s desire to develop its workforce and prioritise their welfare that led to the endorsement of NMCTS by the Asian Confederation of Businesses, the Employer Branding Institute (EBI), and the World HRD Congress to win the CMO Asia award.
EBI assessed over 200 companies based on workplace contribution and innovation, consistent improvement in HR policy specifically on organisational health and company values, being a social employer, and developing future leaders.
