THE Hearing Awareness Charity Bazaar ended on a high note yesterday following five days of fundraising activities geared towards raising funds to provide and maintain aids for hearing impaired individuals.
The final day of the event at the ground floor of The Mall in Gadong saw performances staged by Jerudong International School (JIS)’s violin group, a Gulingtangan group from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and piano recitals by Yamaha Symphony Music School.
Prizes for events such as the ‘IHSAN OUD’ competition and the DST Sign and Win competition were also handed out on the final day.
Funds raised during the event, themed ‘Garden Tea Party,’ will be used to provide financial support in the training of speech therapists or special needs educators for hearing-impaired children.
General Manager of the event organiser Hear Better Services Company and Project Manager of the ‘Better Hearing, Better Living Charity Project’ Hajah Noorafzah binti Dato Paduka Haji Ahmad said this is the fourth year the company has organised the event.
She recently shared that over the past three years under the ‘Better Hearing, Better Living Charity Project,’ the organisation had sponsored hearing aids for 28 children through the fundraiser event and also directly through sponsorship from companies such as DST and Brunei LNG.
Apart from sponsoring hearing aids, the raised funds are also being used to provide care and advice through follow-up sessions with the children.
Hajah Noorafzah explained that recipients of hearing aids from the project are typically recommended by the Special Education Unit of the Ministry of Education and that at present there are 300 hearing-impaired children registered with the unit.
The event is also supported by the Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Education and DST. Hear Better Services said they hope their efforts will help reduce dependency on the government and encourage greater community awareness.
