THE Blood Bank Unit of the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital in collaboration with Kemuda Institute in Beribi yesterday organised a blood donation campaign.
The charitable drive, which took place at the Kemuda Institute BSB Campus, aimed to raise awareness among the general public as well as staff and students of the institute on the importance of saving lives by boosting the national blood bank’s supply. Thirty pints of blood were collected for the Kemuda Institute blood donation.
It was the 4th year that the RIPAS Hospital’s Blood Bank Unit and Kemuda Institute organised such an event which received a good response not only from the students but also walk-in donors.
It is estimated that RIPAS Hospital uses 30 to 45 pints of blood daily to treat leukaemia and thallasemia patients and for operations, emergency treatments and many more.
At times, RIPAS Hospital also delivers blood to hospitals in other districts if their stock is not enough and if they urgently need it.
In order to ensure the sufficient stock of blood, the Blood Bank Unit always welcomes organisations and individuals to come to the donation centre.

Donors must go through health screening before they are eligible to donate blood. This is important to know their health status such as weight and the amount of haemoglobin in the body. Once they pass the screening test and are considered fit, they are allowed to make the donation.
The eligible age for blood donation starts at 17 years (with parental consent) and the donors must weigh more than 45kg.
Those who want to donate their blood are welcome to drop by at the Blood Bank Unit, at the RIPAS Hospital.
