BRUNEI Darussalam will compete in a prestigious international Information Communications Technology (ICT) competition, the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards, which will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka today to November 22. Brunei will be represented by seven teams comprising winners and runner-ups of the Brunei ICT Awards (BICTA) 2015.
The APICTA Awards is an annual international awards programme which aims to increase ICT awareness in the community and assist in bridging the digital divide. By providing networking and product benchmarking opportunities to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the region, the programme is designed to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity, promote economic and trade relations, facilitate technology transfer, and offer business matching opportunities via exposure to venture capitalists and investors.
Participants of APICTA Awards consist of 16 member economies, namely Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Nepal. They are guided by the Framework of Cooperation identifying how member economies can work together in support of the awards programme as well as other programmes that foster development and growth of the ICT industry in the region.
Brunei Darussalam’s delegation to APICTA 2015 was led by Julianah binti Haji Ali Ahmad, Senior Assistant Chief Executive of the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), who is also one of Brunei’s Executive Committee (ExCo) members in APICTA. Other Brunei ExCo member representatives at this event are Sheikh Abas bin Sheikh Mohamad and Gary Liau Tian Soon, Chairman and Treasurer of InfoCom Federation Brunei (IFB) respectively.

The seven teams who will be competing are St John’s School, Kuala Belait with ‘iStudyGCSE’; Chung Hwa Middle School, BSB with ‘C@Attendance’; Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) with ‘ITB Virtual Campus’; Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS) with ‘ChewBitz’; D5 Innovation with ‘VirtualKiub’; SnapFeed Sdn Bhd with ‘SnapFeed’; and RingPing with ‘RingPing’.
The Brunei’s delegation also includes three judges, namely Jennifer Voon Nyuk Hiong of Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB); Dr Fadzliwati binti Mohiddin of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA); and Pengiran Sarimah binti Pengiran Haii Abdul Latiff of SUHBE Co, as well as one advisory judging panel, namely Dr Yong Chee Tuan of Yi-Ecomodern Solutions Sdn Bhd.
Brunei’s participation in the APICTA Awards is a continuous initiative by the Ministry of Communications to stimulate innovation and creativity in ICT, as well as to develop the nation’s ICT sector by encouraging individuals, students and businesses to compete at the international level. Since 2008, Brunei has received two winner awards, 13 merit awards and one special mention.
