LOCAL employees must increase the quality of work to prove that they can be on par with foreign workers who are usually paid higher.

This was said by the Acting Commissioner of Labour Haji Rani bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Mohd Yusof during an interview with members of the media at a roadshow on labour laws, in Kuala Belait yesterday.

He urged that locals should prove to their employers that they can perform their job as well as their foreign workers who are usually given better non-monetary benefits such as, transportation, medical and housing for example.

“Discussions are being made to establish fairness in terms of fringe packages for the local employees,” added the acting commissioner.

Another emphasis made by him was the importance of a conducive and safe workplace towards increasing productivity by employees.

In relation to that, Haji Rani explained that the purpose of the roadshow is to spread awareness especially to employers and employees in the private sector so that they understand the laws and regulations of labour of the Sultanate as well as their rights as employers and employee as stated in the Labour Act 2009.

The event saw the presence of a panel comprising officials from the Labour Department who gave talks on the laws and regulations related to their divisions.

It is also hoped that the briefings would lead to less labour-related complaints.

The acting commissioner also stressed on the importance for employer to prepare service contracts and abide by the terms under the Foreign Workers Recruitment Licence issued by the Labour Department.

He also called out to the managers and work safety officers to be more proactive in carrying out their duties as they involve safety at workplace, adding that prioritising the safety, health and welfare of the employees would keep untowards incidents and injuries at the minimal level.

Around 150 representatives from the private sector in Kuala Belait attended the roadshow.
