HISTORY curriculum in schools is gaining more popularity, with a marked annual increase in students enrolling for the subject, the Minister of Education said yesterday, while urging students to study more about Brunei history to preserve their heritage, and national identity.
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong made the remarks during a prize presentation ceremony for an inaugural video clip production competition, documenting the history of the Brunei monarchy. The ceremony was held at The Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong.
The minister cited the efforts made by the Ministry of Education to impart those values to students. This includes the introduction of Social Studies for students in Years 4, 5 and 6, an integrated approach which is expected to enrich their knowledge comprehensively, through different angles.
The minister also hoped that more students could master the skill of historical research better, especially through intricate documentation, analysing facts and sources, and making use of technological advances as a medium to offer quality evaluation.

The competition, themed “Empowering the History of the Brunei Sultanate” was organised by the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) Supreme Council, with the joint support of the Ministry of Education’s Curriculum Development Department.
Mahad Islam Brunei won first prize, for their video depicting the evolution of Islam during the era of Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam. The winners received a cash prize of $1,000.
Second place went to Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School (SMPDSM) for their video showing the reign of Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Akhazul Khairi Waddien during the Japanese Occupation in Brunei, in 1941.
Third place went to Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School (SUAMRIPAD) for their video on the history of Islam in Brunei Darussalam.
A total of 13 entries were received from several schools and colleges in all four districts. Consolation prizes went to Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) and Raja Isteri Girls High School (STPRI), which placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Video clips produced by the students will be compiled into a DVD, as a resource support for teaching and learning in schools. Each video is focused on the reign of a Brunei monarch, highlighting their leadership, and the progress achieved under their rule in the fields of education, economy, custom and traditions, national development and religion.
Yesterday’s event also witnessed the launching of a history book titled “Sejarah Sultan-Sultan Brunei” (A History of the Sultans of Brunei).
