THE 7th Multi-GNSS Asia Conference was officially opened yesterday at The Rizqun International Hotel.

Present as the guest of honour at the launching ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Development, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar.

Over 100 Global Satellite Navigation System (GNSS) and geospatial solution experts from Europe and Asia are attending the three-day event which carries the theme ‘Geospatial Challenges in the Asia-Pacific Region’ to help the region’s industry players bridge the gap by identifying challenges and offering business networking opportunities and solutions in the geospatial field.

In his keynote speech, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi hoped the conference will enhance knowledge on new technologies and strengthen the relationship between the public and private sectors.

He urged relevant organisations to work together in line with the theme of the conference and avoid duplication of works in acquiring geospatial data and this will certainly reduce the cost of data acquisition.

Brunei Darussalam through its Survey Department and as one of the executive members of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP), actively involves in sharing geospatial information and GPS observation for the Global Geodetic Reference, he added.

He hoped that issues of environmental degradation due to smoke from forest fires in the region and how GNSS technology can be employed for quicker and near real time information to remedy natural disasters will be discussed in the GNSS workshop.

The use of new technology such as GPS or GNSS for earthquake monitoring, weather prediction, disaster management and others will underpin our socio-economic development. In this regard, it is imperative for professionals in the country to keep abreast with the latest technology, the deputy minister said.

GNSS which is similar to GPS in the USA, can provide accurate position and time. GNSS technologies offer a myriad of advantages and enable countless applications, from Location-Based Services (LBS), to disaster prevention and mitigation, road applications, agricultural sector, maritime solutions as well as technologies for infrastructure management.

The three-day event is organised by a coalition of organisations – Multi-GNSS Asia (MGA), an organisation whose aim is to promote multi-GNSS applications in the Asia and Oceania region; Soartech Systems Sdn Bhd, a Brunei-based engineering company; two European organisations – GNSS.asia and BELS; and Japanese entities like Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), QZS System Services (QSS) and Satellite Positioning Research and Application Center (SPAC).

In addition, the conference is supported by several Brunei government agencies such as Survey Department under the Ministry of Development and Brunei Tourism under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism as well as international organisations – UN-ICG and International GNSS Service (IGS).

Established in 2011, Multi-GNSS Asia (MGA) is a voluntary organisation whose aim is to promote multi-GNSS utilisation in the Asia and Oceania region.
