PHOTOGRAPHY plays a significant and important role for the country and its people, in recording or documenting events of national or personal interest that can further enrich and preserve historical material.
The significance of photography was underscored by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, at the opening ceremony for the 35th Bi-Annual General Meeting of the Brunei Darussalam Photography Association, which was held at the Youth Centre yesterday.
The minister went on to say that clear photographic images can enhance the experience for viewers, especially young people.
With the Internet and social media readily available, he emphasised that “a visual resource that is accurate and correct, is important in capturing the true image of an event. This corresponds to the English phrase: ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’.”
He also believed that photography had a huge business potential, saying, “In a world centred on media and information, camera expertise is a valuable asset for the creative industry. The creativity and technical skills employed in photography can create high-value artwork to appeal to local, regional and international enthusiasts.”

The minister also said that a mutual collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Brunei Darussalam Photography Association could launch numerous projects and programmes for youth development, especially in the fields of entrepreneurship and skill-building.
Meanwhile, Hamidun bin Haji Mohd Noor, the President of the Brunei Darussalam Photography Association, was re-elected for another term.
At the same time, Murni bin Haji Mahali was re-elected as the association’s Secretary-General. The posts of the other executive members will be decided on a future date.
Hamidun recalled the association’s many achievements in his speech. He also thanked his fellow members for their support, and vowed to raise the association to new heights.
“Together as members, we can build more success for the association,” he said.
The highlight of the ceremony saw Jinnidi bin Haji Mahali receiving the association’s Photographer of the Year award.
This is the fourth time that Awang Jinnidi has won the award.
Currently, there are around 60 active members of the Brunei Darussalam Photography Association.
