FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Muhamad Auni Marzuqi bin Haji Anuar came in eighth place in the 11th edition of Mohammed VI International Award of Psalmody of the Holy Quran competition held in Morocco recently.
The local Qari who faced 22 contenders from different countries in the two-and-a-half ‘Juzuks’ memorising in the ‘taranum’ (melody) category was the youngest participant in the competition.
His return to Brunei Darussalam with his accompanying coach and delegation leader Muhammad Azim bin Haji Ali at the Brunei International Airport yesterday was welcomed by officers from the Islamic Teaching Development Section of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA).
A student of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Muhamad Auni told the Bulletin that as this was his first time entering an international competition, he gained a lot of knowledge and experience from the other contenders and this has motivated him to train harder and improve his Al-Quran reading and memorisation skills.

The Qari’s coach, Muhammad Azim, said organisers and judges praised the young talent, adding that he has a lot of potential but needs more practice and skill-polishing.
“To be placed in the 8th position is already good enough, because he was facing tough and seasoned contenders in the competition,” the coach said, adding that Muhamad Auni demonstrated confidence during his performance.
The 11th edition of Mohammed VI International Award of Psalmody of the Holy Quran competition was held from December 15-20, 2015.
