A RISING number of Bruneians are using the year-end holiday to perform the Umrah pilgrimage at Makkah and Madinah. Unlike the Haj, the Umrah pilgrimage can be performed at any time of the year.
A large group of relatives of around 40 people had decided to choose this year-end holiday season to perform the Umrah pilgrimage together. The family left for Madinah yesterday.
The family shared that performing the Umrah together helps strengthen solidarity and since it can be tiring especially for the elderly members of the family, going together can be comforting for them.
At first the decision to go for a mass Umrah was from a family member who wanted to sponsor the entire family, but the number got bigger as their relatives wanted to pay themselves to join the pilgrimage.
Eventually they decided to go together in one large group.
The annual Haj journey can be one of great discovery and self-fulfilment, and performing the Umrah, which is also known as the ‘mini Haj’ or ‘minor Haj’, is no less fulfilling.

The number of Haj pilgrims from each country is quite limited, but for the Umrah pilgrimage, there is no such limit so families can choose when to go and how many would be joining.
Performing the Umrah is a journey of forgiveness and helps Muslims feel even closer and stronger to their faith, giving them an added feeling of peace and tranquillity. Performing it together in a large group with relatives during the holiday season also adds to the fulfilment.
The family said that the Haj and Umrah also symbolise solidarity among the Muslim Ummah, and how better to do it than with a group of family members.
