THE Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) along with TelBru as their collaborative partner; yesterday assisted some 170 underprivileged children ranging from primary to secondary school by sponsoring them in their school essential purchases to prepare them for the upcoming school year of 2016.
The ‘Back to School Project’ is an annual project conducted by MKM with the aim of helping underprivileged children in the country. This is the second year that TelBru joined in on the project as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives.
For this project, TelBru donated $5,000.
In a brief interview with the Vice-President II of MKM Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Perkasa Colonel (Rtd) Dato Paduka Haji Mahdini bin Dato Paduka Haji Basir, shared with the media that the project is part of MKM’s effort to address and support the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in addressing family and children welfare issues.
“As schools will re-open in a few weeks time, most of the children at this time are hoping to buy their new school essentials for their education needs. For these underprivileged children, having new school essentials means so much for them,” he said.

Since the start of the project, more underprivileged families have been helped. During their first year, some 60 families from the same group were successfully assisted, and this year, MKM tried to reach out to more underprivileged families.
“Among our initiative in reaching more of those who are in need, MKM doesn’t only visit their school but also approach them personally by visiting their houses and do background interviews through our legal clinic,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mona Adiliana binti Asmat, Junior Executive Corporate Communication of TelBru told the Bulletin that this is their second consecutive year for the project.
“Going back to school is highly anticipated for any student. Therefore, it is a great opportunity for TelBru to participate in the project and assist the children to find what they need for their school essentials,” she said.
“Today, we have 20 volunteers from TelBru who are ready to assist the children in finding their school needs,” she added.
The smiling faces of the children showed just how grateful they were for the aid. They got to shop for their essentials in the shops at Serusop such as Bata, Teguh Raya, Bismi Trading and more.
Aside from MKM and TelBru, the project is also using part of the money donated by Persatuan Warganegara Malaysia (Malaysian Citizen Association) during the recent Muhibbah Colour Charity Run.
MKM normally spends between $150 – $300 per students and those who are in their secondary school will require more provision.
Meanwhile in a quote by the President of MKM, Datin Paduka Hajah Intan binti Haji Mohd Kassim, she stated that “It is hard work trying to raise money and Alhamdulillah, we received more support from the public now and I would like to thank those who have contributed to our work.”
“I am also thankful to have dedicated committee members and a group of hard working members,” she added.
