OUTWARD Bound Brunei Darussalam (OBBD) Centre has reached another historic milestone, after passing the international standard test for the eighth time, from Outward Bound International (OBI).
The international standard test is for the session 2017-2018, and was recently conducted by experts from OBI.
One of the test’s main requirements is a Programme Review Outward Bound conducted by all worldwide affiliates of OBI, as a biennial programme that emphasises on the safety features. In addition, the programme also involves studies and research on the development of the operations for the OBBD Centre.
The OBBD Centre has been through the review programme since 1996. In 1999, the centre was awarded the permanent licence membership, after completing the standard test set up by Outward Bound International.
To date, the programme continues to be enforced to ensure that all Outward Bound centres worldwide operate according to the standards set by OBI.
Among the test’s aims is to fulfil the mandatory requirements set by OBI, especially to ensure that quality and safety are enforced according to the established guideline. It is required for all Outward Bound centres, or schools, under the governing body to undergo a review programme every two years. A centre, or school, that fails to comply with the mandatory requirements can lead to loss or suspension of membership.

The review is also aimed at identifying the strengths, weaknesses and potential of OBBD which covers all aspects of management, operation, training, medicine, quality of service, safety and other related issues. It also assists in improving any weaknesses that have been identified, which helps to promote the image of OBBD as one of the world’s best Outward Bound centres.
Haji Mohamad Rosfazilah bin Haji Yusly, the head of OBBD, said, “We feel proud that Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam has been designated as one of the most excellent Outward Bound centres, with unique and special features such as tropical forests, clean rivers and well-managed government facilities.”
He added, “The OBBD hopes the centre will attract more local people, especially parents and guardians, with trust for these centres which conduct outdoor activities with the aim of moulding characters to be more robust, confident and independent, in accordance with Vision 2035.”
