MATHEMATICS is a very popular subject at Jerudong International School (JIS). Each year, the Maths faculty, headed by Ed Kyle, hosts a number of Team and Individual Maths competitions. One such competition that students are encouraged to volunteer for is the UK Maths Challenge (UKMT). This Challenge is known internationally and encourages students’ love and passion for Maths.
The Junior Maths Challenge (JMC) involving schools from around the world is aimed at pupils in Year 8 (age 11-13) or below. The challenge involves answering twenty-five multiple choice questions in one hour – without a calculator. The questions are aimed at testing students’ Mathematical dexterity and their ability to apply the Mathematics they learn in school in unusual ways.
The top 40 per cent of students receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3. Around 1,200 of the highest scorers are then invited to participate in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad.
Last year 23 of JIS Year 7 and 8 students volunteered to enter the competition organised by Maths teacher, Phil May. Dominick Ang achieved Gold and as he had a very high score in the JMC, was invited to take part in the Junior Maths Olympiad in which he achieved a Merit. Adrija Majumder also achieved an excellent Gold award. Chloe Chua, Natasha Sia, Siren Munawar, Dylan Chua, Yaaseen Taher received Silver awards and Louis Kong and Sayuni Ekanyake achieved a Bronze award.
