AS THE servants of Allah the Almighty, we should be grateful for His act of mercy in sending the noble Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to this world.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam underscored this in a titah delivered yesterday in conjunction with Maulidur Rasul – birth anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The monarch highlighted that the birth of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) brought this world from darkness into light and taught humans to be more civilised with compassion for others.

This mission of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was like a shining lamp providing guidance to mankind and this, added His Majesty, was why Allah the Almighty chose him to be His messenger.

“We should remember the Prophet’s birthday in memory of his blessed deeds and also as a token of our gratitude. We should observe this historical occasion through prayers, Zikir and attending religious lectures instead of wasting time on frivolous activities,” the monarch added.

There have been opinions that Muslims should not observe the Prophet’s birthday and other important dates in the Islamic calendar such as the New Islamic Year of Hijrah, “but these are weak arguments”, His Majesty said.

The monarch urged Muslims to continue observing Islamic holidays regardless of some dissenting opinions.

“We are following these traditions for our own good as well as to uphold the value of Islam in the eyes of the world.”

His Majesty reminded them to promote Islam, the way Allah the Almighty did it in Surah Ali ‘Imran in the Al-Quran which translates to “The best religion with Allah is Islam”.

Islam’s message, said His Majesty, is everlasting and free from corruption.

His Majesty highlighted that the Prophet taught compassion for others and so it is necessary for him to be always remembered as an inspiration in our continuing efforts to uphold the values of Islam.

His Majesty ended the titah with the hope that Brunei Darussalam will continue to be blessed with peace, harmony and prosperity.
