FIVE young Dusun people embraced Islam yesterday in a ceremony in conjunction with the national celebrations for Maulidur Rasul 1437 Hijrah.
The conversion ceremony was held at the Kampong Bebuloh Religious Activity Centre and witnessed by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman.
Harliff Nabillah bin Sayong chose Muhammad Alif bin Sayong as his Muslim name. Meanwhile, Jay Wandel Punchak and Mas Shukri Punchak are now known as Muhammad Nuriman Yazid bin Abdullah Punchak and Muhammad Nur Zaqwan Shukri bin Abdullah Punchak, respectively.
At the same time, Maslin Punchak and Sownahty Punchak took Nur Liyana Dafinah binti Abdullah Punchak and Nur Sumaiyah Sownahty binti Abdullah Punchak, as their respective Muslim names.

The conversion ceremony was conducted by officers from the Islamic Dakwah Centre.
After the pledge of Syahadah, the ceremony continued with the presentation of gifts by the Minister of Religious Affairs. It was then followed with the recitation of Dikir Marhaban to celebrate the new converts.
Statistics from January to November this year showed that 460 individuals converted to Islam.
Also present at yesterday’s ceremony were the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud and the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof.
