SEOUL (MK Business News) – The so-called ‘supercars’ with a price tag of over 200 million to one billion won ($1=1,170 won) is selling well in South Korea even amid economic downturn.
In the first 11 months of this year, combined sales of the world’s leading supercar makers – Rolls-Royce, Maserati, Porsche, Bentley Motor – soared over 39 per cent from a year ago, said the Maeil Business Newspaper on Sunday.
This is about 20 percentage points higher than estimated sales of foreign cars which are expected to grow 19.7 per cent this year. It is about five times higher than the estimated 8.1 per cent of overall auto sales.
Italy’s supercar maker Maserati crossed its sales threshold of 1,000 units. The feat is the first-ever since Maserati made inroad into Korea in 2007. The annual sales figure skyrocketed 38 per cent from 723 units last year and nine times from 115 units in 2013.
Maserati’s robust growth in Korea is setting a good example in the global auto market, said Maserati.
Bently sold 360 units in the first 11 months of this year, exceeding last year’s over 10 per cent. Last year, the Bentley outlet in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul, sold the highest number of Flying Spur sedans in the world even though it costs over 240 million won to 280 million won.
During the cited period, Porsche sold 3,670 units, representing over 1,000 units rise from 2,568 tallied a year ago. Its steady-seller GTS features 440 horse power and a maximum speed of 288km/h.
Rolls Royce sold 54 units during the same period, three times higher than 18 units sold in 2010. The stellar growth was led by Rolls Royce Ghost launched in Korea in 2010.
Ferrari’s sales in Korea crossed 100 units last year, twice as high as the previous year, said sources.
