QUITE possible one of the best and most innovative programmes to ever come out from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) – the Master of Teaching (MTeach) – commenced yesterday with the start of a three-day orientation at the Senate Room, Chancellor Hall, UBD, which was attended by graduate students and lecturers of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE).

Yesterday’s session began with an opening address from Dr Jainatul Halida binti Haji Jaidin, the Dean of SHBIE, who gave the graduates some encouragement.

The MTeach programme integrates the disciplinary knowledge of graduate entry candidates with a masters-level study of how to teach and incorporates the areas of specialisations that include Early Childhood Education and Care, Primary Education, Secondary Education, Vocational and Technical Education, as well as Higher Education.

For the next couple of days, the teacher students will hear talks presented by professional teachers and experts in their chosen fields, as well as have sharing sessions with current MTeach students that will generate first-hand information on their experience in the programme.

In a brief media conference, Dr Jainatul Halida expressed her hope that the MTeach students can fulfil the various demands and requirements, be proactive in their methods, and work closely with their teachers and mentors.

Dr Hajah Sallimah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, the Deputy Dean (Research) of SHBIE, added that the teacher students will be trained in various skills in their 18-month course that will see them assessed in three different modules.

The training will also include video-taped sessions and involve some analysis training.
