THE sighting of a four-metre-long crocodile (see photos below) lurking in a drain shocked villagers in Kg Kapok Kanan yesterday morning.

The crocodile was spotted by a group of Vietnamese who were walking along the road near the Kg Kapok Mosque.

“At first we thought it was just another ‘biawak’ (monitor lizard) which was common here in the village early in the morning. One of our friends decided to take a closer look and was surprised to see the crocodile’s tail sticking out of the drain,” they said.

The group decided to catch the croco-dile by luring it to the big sewer before stunning it by hitting it several times on the head.

Together with the help of some locals at the scene, the crocodile was hoisted out of the sewer.

Village residents said this was the first time they had encountered a crocodile there.

“This is the first time such a thing has happened here in our village,” said one of the residents. “However I am not surprised as the river behind Kg Kapok Mosque is connected to the Salar River and flows straight to the sea at Meragang Beach.”

A Fire and Rescue Department personnel who was dispatched to the scene believed that the crocodile may have lost its way because of fluctuating weather conditions.
