BRUNEIAN Abdul Wafi bin Haji Abdul Rahman, from Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), did the country proud when he clinched third place at the 3rd Regional Higher Learning Institution Level Islamic Education Speech Competition (PEDAPIS) at Raya Hall, Radio Televisyen Brunei in Bandar Seri Begawan last night.
Muhamad Ilham Fauzi, from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, took home the first prize while Norsyuhada binti Ibrahim, from Institut Pendidikan Guru Bangi, Kuala Lumpur, came in second, beating the three other finalists.
Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, presented the prizes.
The event began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by welcoming remarks from Dr Haji Noralizam bin Haji Aliakbar, Student Dean, Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan in his capacity as the event chairperson.
Dr Haji Noralizam said the objective of the competition was to produce quality speakers from higher learning institutions and unearth talented students.

He said the competition was also aimed at exposing students to public speaking and enhancing relations among regional higher learning institutions.
This year saw 10 participants from seven local and foreign higher learning institutions taking part in the competition, namely host KUPU SB, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), Institut Pendidikan Guru Batu Lintang Sabah Malaysia, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Pendidikan Islam Bangi Malaysia and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.
Apart from a challenge trophy and participation certificate, the winners pocketed $1,500, $1,000 and $700 respectively.
Each of the other finalists each received $100, a plaque, memorabilia and certificate of participation.
There was also a Hadrah performance.
The semi-final was held at the Tarbiyah Hall of KUPU SB on Wednesday.
The competition was held in conjunction with the 5th Convocation of Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan 1436H/2015M.
