THE Sunnah is indivisible from the Al-Quran and these are the legacy of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to the Muslims for them to observe, appreciate and put into practice for gaining the blessings from Allah the Almighty.

This was highlighted by Dr Hajah Sarinah binti Haji Yahya, Dean of Faculty of Usuluddin at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), in her special religious talk on ‘Menghayati Sunnah Rasulullah Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam’ or Exemplifying the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) during the special assembly for women which was held in conjunction with the Commemoration of Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) 1437 Hijrah birth anniversary at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

Dr Hajah Sarinah further explained that Sunnah means a journey, practice or a way of life that originates from the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) upon looking through his life history, his characteristics and supreme moral behaviour.

In relating the Sunnah to the Al-Quran, she highlighted that the al-Quran shows that Islam plays a positive role in the development and progress of mankind and it also reflects the image and character of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as witnessed by his companions.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), she continued, was also addressed as ‘Al-Amin’ (the trustworthy) by the people in Makkah because they considered him to be someone reliable and honest.

Dr Hajah Sarinah added that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) applied these qualities in all of his life aspects including employment and this reflects one of his main characteristics which was ‘Amanah’ (Trustworthy). She said that this is the character that we should consider as Sunnah that needs to be observed.

“In this contemporary world, luxurious materials are seen as blessings. Ranks and titles are chased after until some succumbed to betrayal. There is no trust; fraud often occurs unnoticed because the one that was trusted was good at playing their role. Susceptible to distortion like it’s a game to make the behaviours seem reasonable but is actually full of lies and delinquency in work. Observe and examine the Prophet’s (pbuh) Sunnah, have we exemplified the Sunnah in carrying out our duties?”

She also stressed that observing the Prophet’s (pbuh) Sunnah should not be forged and fabricated with false facts which were attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). To exemplify this matter, Dr Hajah Sarinah highlighted on the viral nature of some rituals and selawat, which were supposedly recommended by the Prophet (pbuh) through social media or product branding based on Sunnah such as ‘Makanan Sunnah’ (Sunnah Food) to boost productivity.

These matters, she added, would require careful and diligent research because even if it’s right, the way people may carry it out might be slightly or completely inaccurate and these are among the examples of inaccuracies of embracing the Prophet’s (pbuh) Sunnah.

She further explained that the exemplification of the Sunnah should be done with practical expression of what is stated in the Al-Quran and hadith such as prayers that need to be taught and practised from an early age.

“Alhamdulillah, we are lucky that our nation practises prayers in all aspects of our lives. In schools, hospitals, radio and television shows, pre-flight prayers, the praying practice is highly emphasised,” she added.

She continued that these religious ritual practices seemed small but if it is constantly practised and exemplified, it will become much more valuable especially with the Selawat upon the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as stated in the Al-Quran. She added that the Selawat are prayers that aim to ask from Allah the Almighty to shower His blessings, glory, honour and praise to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Dr Hajah Sarinah also emphasised that exemplifying the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) means to love Allah the Almighty and His Prophets.

“Love is not merely just a feeling that should be revealed, it is more of an appreciation that needs to be expressed through deeds and actions. Let us initiate ourselves in exemplifying the Prophet’s Sunnah and may we be blessed among those who were given guidance and directions for following and obeying his Sunnah.”
