THE implementation of the Tuition Class Project under the Education Intervention Programme (PIP) by the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation serves as the foundation’s initiative to identify children – who are from low income and less fortunate families – that are in need of thorough academic guidance.
The programme also serves to ensure these identified children are able to pursue their studies up to a higher level.
At the initial stage of the PIP implementation in 2006, the programme targeted PSR students from Kampong Bolkiah who were studying at several primary schools in Kampong Ayer and later the PIP Centre was moved to the YSHHB School in 2008.
PIP began its student assistance programme covering not only those who would be sitting for their PSR examinations but those sitting for their SPE Year 8 and BC GCE ‘O’ Level examinations in 2009.
Yayasan expanded the scope of the programme to nearby schools on land and still uses the YSHHB School as its tuition centre. The schools involved in the programme were Berakas and Menglait secondary schools, Pulaie, Anggerek Desa, Delima 1 and Sultan Abdul Bubin Sungai Besar primary schools.

PIP opens its centre in Tutong in 2013 located at the Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School followed by the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Secondary School the following year while in the Brunei-Muara District the PIP Centre was extended to Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School in 2014 and to date PIP has two centres each located in the two districts.
As a continuation of the programme, Yayasan continued it efforts in helping the less fortunate students in the Belait District last year where the PIP programme was outsourced to several private tuition centres registered under the Ministry of Education due to the small number of students.
This year, the first PIP Centre for the Belait District was launched at the Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School and the PIP programme was also extended to the Temburong District involving 43 students comprising students from five primary schools in the district.
The first PIP Centre for Temburong will be conducted at the Rataie Primary School every Monday and Tuesday evenings beginning March 7 and in enlightening parents of the students’ involvement in the programme, Yayasan hosted a briefing yesterday at the Rataie Primary School.
From the total 43, seven students are from Puni Primary School, 22 from Rataie Primary School, eight from Selangan Primary School, five from Semabat Primary School and two from Sultan Hassan Primary School.
Present as the guest of honour was Managing Director of Yayasan Haji Brahim bin Haji Ismail.
The briefing began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, followed by welcoming remarks by the guest of honour who also presented tuition materials to all the selected students of the PIP programme in the district.
The event was then followed with the briefing on the PIP project to the parents and students present by Acting Assistant Director and Head of Cluster 4, MoE, Hajah Mariam binti Haji Ladi.
Yesterday’s event also saw a motivational talk by acting Assistant Director, Head of Counselling and Career Guidance, Department of Schools, MoE, Haji Ali Yusri bin Abdul Ghafor.
