DUE to requests from teachers and students, the dates of the preliminary round for the Science Show Competition organised by Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) will be changed to April.
The preliminaries will now commence on April 5 for teams from the Belait and Tutong Districts and April 6 for teams from the Brunei-Muara and Temburong Districts, a press release said. The process of short listing the candidates will begin from this point on before the selections for the semi-finals.
Due to the date changes, the organising committee is extending the closing date for the registration to March 26.
In preparation for the Science Show Competition, OGDC recently concluded its science show workshop for schools conducted by OGDC’s science communicators.
These workshops are meant to familiarise participants on the techniques and guidelines of producing a good science show. It consists of live demonstrations made by OGDC’s science communicators bringing them different displays of science experiments whilst educating them on delivering a good performance.

It was highlighted in the briefing a successful science show needs to be interactive and it is vital that they make their audience a part of the show. In addition, the performer needs to be unique with his or her own style, as well as utilising humour and emotions to enable the audience to ‘feel the science’. This way, the crowds will be entertained while remaining curious and eager to learn.
School requiring coaching for the preliminary preparation are welcome to invite OGDCs’ science communicators to conduct a one-on-one science show tutorial session.
