AS COUNTRIES around the world celebrate elderly citizens for the contributions they have made in communal and societal developments, Brunei Darussalam yesterday marked the special occasion with mass Maghrib and Isyak prayers at the Community Hall in Kg Lambak Kanan.

As part of a series of activities to mark the International Elderly Citizens Day that is observed yearly on October 1, the Community Development Department (JAPEM) under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) invited more than 250 elderly citizens over the age of 60 to the event, as a means to acknowledge their efforts towards building a stronger nation.

Also in attendance yesterday were Acting Minister Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman from the MCYS, as well as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, and other senior government officials.

Also held were recitations of the Surah Yaasiin and Tahlil as well as the ‘Doa Kesyukuran’ and ‘Doa Allah Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara’.
