ALL roads leading to Shell stations in the country saw heavy traffic yesterday as people rushed to buy fuel in view of the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.
Long queues were seen at several petrol filling stations, and the number of vehicles started to increase in the afternoon. However, everything was under control.
According to staff at a fuel station in Muara, long queues are normal during the festival period as people who are excited about the celebration stock up on fuels in order to avoid last minute run as well as to make long journeys.
Normally, the situation will continue until the first and second day of Raya, a staff member said.
But some areas experienced congestion near fuel stations. “I tried to avoid the rush at one station and opted for another one, but got caught in a long queue there,” said housewife Zaiton from Kg Salar, Muara.
“I bought the fuel earlier for my cars, but now I have to fill my son’s car as that will be used to visit our relatives during the celebration,” said Haji Abdul Hamid, a former government servant.
In the past, the situation was not as bad as nowadays, mainly due to the fact that there were fewer vehicles at that time, he said.
“Now, everyone who has a job can afford a car and to cope with the increasing number of cars more fuel stations should be set up in the country,” he added.
