THE Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) has stated that information spread through social media of an impending storm over the country are “unfounded”.
BDMD made the clarification in a press statement, which was issued yesterday.
“The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department would like to clarify that information being disseminated through the social media, ‘WhatsApp’, stating that an impending storm is expected tomorrow over Brunei Darussalam is unfounded.”
The department went on to say that Brunei will be experiencing mainly fine weather, with a variable amount of clouds.
“However, as is often the case in the tropics, thundershowers are likely to affect the sea and coastal areas during the early morning and at night, and over the interior areas during the afternoon.”
According to BDMD, these activities are usually short-lived and may become quite heavy over some areas. Gusting winds of up to 40km/h can be expected over areas where it rains the heaviest.
“We will continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and issue a weather advisory or warning, if the situation warrants it,” said BDMD.
“We would also like to remind the general public not to disseminate unverified weather information through social media, which may cause panic and fear to other members of the public.”
BDMD is also advising the public to keep updated with the latest weather information by visiting its website at www.met.gov.bn, or Facebook page at bruneiweather, and by means of the Brunei WX mobile application.
The public may also contact the Duty Meteorological Forecaster at BDMD’s Forecast Office through the Weather Line 114.
