The wet and windy conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of the crowds in Tutong District as they waited in eager anticipation for the arrival of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and other members of the royal family at the get-together ceremony held in conjunction with the monarch’s 70th birthday celebrations.
A few of them shared their fond memories of the event.
Sam Ying Kok, a local businessman, said it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to meet His Majesty and it is obvious the people of Brunei Darussalam love His Majesty very much.
“We wish His Majesty a long and healthy life and that our country will continue to be more prosperous,” he said.
Steven Chai from Soon Lee Department Store always tries hard not to miss attending the special event despite his busy schedule, saying that he cherishes meeting His Majesty.
Daniela Adamcova, a teacher from Piestany, Slovakia, said she was excited to meet His Majesty.
She has enjoyed her time in Brunei Darussalam, a colourful country, she said.
“I like the natural surroundings and the people are very welcoming and friendly. I have been in this country for a week and I plan to stay longer. I would love to learn more about the culture of the country,” she said.
Susan Philips, a teacher from Wigan, England who works at Sengkarai Secondary School, Tutong, said this was her first opportunity to meet His Majesty. She started her teaching job last January.
It was exciting to take part in the event, she said, addingthat wearing a baju kurong made her feel part of the local community.
She said she and her family also visited the Istana Nurul Iman’s Hari Raya open palace and they loved the occasion when they met members of the royal family.
Zarihah binti Haji Zain and Norsarita from Persatuan Tanjong Maya School, Tutong said they were happy to lead their students to meet His Majesty.
They said the young students can be handful at times, but the excitement and joy of the event are worth it.
