TEN foreign workers employed as fishermen were caught selling fish in a latest labour raid operation early yesterday morning by the Labour Enforcement Division, Ministry of Home Affairs.
The foreign workers were now suspected to have breached the term of their work pass, which is a legal offence punishable under the nation’s labour law.
According to the Department of Labour, for such an offence, the Department can revoke or reduce labour quota on the employers’ licence to take and employ foreign workers and the foreign workers work pass will be cancelled and return home.
In this relation, the Department of Labour reminded the public and employers to not misuse their licence to take and employforeign workers , where an offence to take and employ foreign workers without the approval of the labour commissioner can be taken into legal action under Chapter 112 (1) work Order, 2009, and if found guilty of such an offence, the employer can be prosecuted under Chapter 112 (3) of the same Order, that is a fine not less than $6,000 and not more than $10,000 or imprisonment not less than six months and not more than three years or both.
