THE Ministry of Communications (MinCom) will continue to focus on enhancing transportation and ICT and communication services to promote the mobility of people, goods and services as well as connectivity, locally or abroad, especially in places and countries where the Sultanate has economic interests.
This was said yesterday by the Minister of Communications, Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat at a meeting between the ministry and members of the Legislative Council (LegCo) which took place at the Al-Mahabbah meeting room, Ministry of Communications.
The LegCo delegation which comprised 14 members was led by YB Pehin Orang Kaya Maharaja Kerna Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Yaakub bin Pehin Orang Kaya Maharaja Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Haji Zainal.
The minister said that the ministry has strategic goals in line with the nation’s Vision 2035 to enhance services through the modernisation and upgrading programmes, corporatisation and privatisation, development programmes such as public transportation, and user-focused programmes, as a strategy in providing services to the general public.
“The programmes are an ongoing process and Insya Allah, will be implemented according to the (country’s) ability or through other approaches such as with the participation of the private sector,” he added.

He also said that public policy and management is an aspect that needs to be carefully observed, especially as the country faces various challenges due to regional and global uncertainties.
The ministry is always aware of the important role of the communications sector in the economy’s development and sustainability, providing trading and employment opportunities, creating economic space and reducing poverty, he added.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, Haji Azhar bin Haji Ahmad elaborated on the ministry’s Implementation Plan for 2016 which included major initiatives in public transport, road safety and mobile phone coverage for areas represented by the LegCo members.
The dialogue is a platform to discuss views and suggestions on how to improve service quality standards and operational efficiency while providing both parties the opportunity to share and exchange information on relevant issues.
The annual session aims to further improve relations and cooperation between senior officials of the ministry and LegCo members as well as district representatives. The session saw discussions and updates on issues under the purview of the ministry, particularly on issues brought up during the 10th Legislative Council meeting in 2015 and issues to be raised in this year’s session.
Also in attendance at the dialogue were heads of divisions and departments under the MinCom.
